Sharing the life-changing experience of spelling
Philadelphia, PA
Letter-Board
● About
Buckle up.
Your life is about to change.
My name is Larry Freedman. Our son Jesse is 25 and has Autism and is non-verbal. Up until the age of 22 he had very few communication skills.
That’s when we heard about using a letter board to communicate. His first session was an eye-opener when he surprised us with his ability to answer questions by pointing to the letter board. Soon he was communicating his thoughts and desires and for the first time we were learning who our son was.
Here is the poem Jesse wrote by pointing to letters on a board:
Apraxia is the beast inside
It taunts and takes
Takes everything
My voice silenced
My body a mess
My world differs from yours
But I am in here
Have to break free
Have to show the real me
Gave you all I had
So you could check your boxes
Prisoner of silence
Freedom is near
Listen and you will hear
The sounds of those who break free
I’m coming out of this shell
I’m breaking free from this cage of silence
Many haven’t heard
Many refuse to see
The absolute beauty inside of me
Listen to your heart
shift your thinking
And free your people
Because of spelling, Jesse was able to tell us he wanted to learn how to play the bass and write songs.
